Entertainment industry union leaders are applauding Congress for today’s passage of the $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill, part of which expands key benefits for hundreds of thousands of industry workers who have lost jobs because of the coronavirus shutdown of film, TV and theater productions across the country.

Mister Rogers’ message about looking for the helpers during scary times couldn’t be ringing more true than right now. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,” he said, “my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” As we’re all facing uncertainty around COVID-19, and when production work will return, it’s important to follow Mister Rogers’ lead, and “look for the helpers,” even look for the helper in ourselves.

As you are probably aware, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson has declared a state of civil emergency in response to confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Cuyahoga County, as has Governor DeWine in the state. This is to create the flexibility needed for the city and state to respond effectively in the coming days. Today the Governor issued a ban on events larger than 100 people.

In the wake of the cancellation of what would’ve been the 44th iteration of the Cleveland International Film Festival, organizers have put out a call for donations.
“We are heartbroken that, as a Film Festival Family, we will not have the opportunity to experience CIFF44’s amazing films and talented filmmakers together,” reads the press release sent out earlier today. “However, we support the decisions made by Mayor Frank Jackson and Governor Mike DeWine to protect the health and safety of all Ohioans in the face of COVID-19.”

With Cinemark shutting down Tuesday, the last of the major circuits alongside AMC, Regal, Cineplex Odeon, Marcus, Harkins and more, there really isn’t much left in regards to those cinemas braving the current coronavirus climate, which is also impacting restaurants, schools, gyms, bars, etc., across the U.S.

As the wave of film and TV production shutdowns over the coronavirus pandemic is starting to subside, their staggering impact on below-the-line workers is starting to emerge. IATSE reported Tuesday that the COVID-19-related production suspensions snd event cancellations have resulted in the loss of 120,000 jobs held by its 150,000 members. A large number of those affected work in Hollywood production but IATSE also covers live events, conventions and all people-facing businesses that have been hard hit by the coronavirus outbreak.
Tessa LeBaron, an artist from Ashtabula, was commissioned to illustrate the composition book owned by Elle Fanning’s character in the movie All the Bright Places!

Cleveland’s annual festival, set to celebrate its 44th event and final year at Tower City Cinemas, has been cancelled due to concerns about coronavirus in Northeast Ohio.

We regret not having the opportunity to celebrate our three decades at Tower City Center.
